From 1 July 2008 the routine schedule for child hood immunisations changed, with the introduction of The routine immunisation schedule for children is as follows:
Infanrix®-hexa which is a vaccine new to New Zealand that protects against the 6 serious diseases; diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, hepatitis B and Hib (Haemophilus influenza type b). This combination vaccine is being phased in to replace doses of several other vaccines:
• Infanrix™-IPV (a combined diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio vaccine)
• Comvax® (a combined hepatitis B and Hib vaccine) and
• HBvaxPro® (a hepatitis B vaccine)
The other vaccine added is Prevenar® the new vaccine for Pneumococcal disease. For best protection pneumoccal vaccine is given in 4 doses.
Prevenar® and Infanrix®-hexa will be offered free to all children given at ages; 6 weeks, 3 months, and 5 months, with the forth Prevenar® given at 15 months .
